Harnessing Exercise as Medicine for Parkinson’s Disease
If you are living with Parkinson’s, exercise isn't just beneficial—it is a powerful therapeutic intervention.
Clinical research demonstrates that targeted, high-intensity movement acts as a natural booster for dopamine production and reception in the brain. By stimulating neuroplasticity through deliberate motor learning and cardiovascular challenge, specific neuro-exercise routines can help:
-
Enhance Dopamine Efficiency: High-intensity physical activity promotes brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), helping protect remaining dopamine-producing neurons and improving how your brain utilizes dopamine.
-
Optimize Medication Needs: By naturally driving neural adaptation and symptom management, targeted exercise can help delay functional decline and, in consultation with your neurologist, potentially lower or stabilize the daily dosage of dopaminergic medications needed to control movement symptoms.
-
Maximize "On" Time: Improve movement amplitude, speed, and fluid gait so you feel stronger and more responsive throughout the day.

Important Information for Medicare Beneficiaries
Federal law prohibits physical therapists from accepting cash for medically necessary, skilled physical therapy covered by Medicare Part B. However, Medicare does not cover cash-pay fitness, sports conditioning, post-rehab exercise programs, or proactive fall prevention. Our private-pay offerings are specialized fitness and performance services designed for medically stable individuals. If you experience an acute injury or sudden change in functional status requiring skilled clinical therapy, services will be transitioned to an insurance-based model.
