Torticollis, Flat Spots, and Milestones: A Kansas City Parent’s Guide to Infant PT

When you bring a new baby home, your entire world revolves around their comfort, growth, and development. You track every smile, stretch, and wiggle. But sometimes, parents notice subtle things that raise questions:

  • Why does my baby only turn their head to the right?

  • Is it normal for the back of their head to look a bit flat?

  • Should they be pushing up on their arms during tummy time by now?

If you’ve found yourself searching for answers to these questions, you are not alone—and you don’t have to take a "wait and see" approach or use Dr. Google.

Infant physical therapy is a specialized branch of pediatric care designed to support a baby’s physical movement, head shape, and motor milestones during their most crucial stages of early development. At Function Forward Physical Therapy, we bring expert, in-home infant physical therapy directly to families across the Kansas City metro, creating a calm, supportive space where babies thrive.

Key Areas Addressed in Infant Physical Therapy

Infant physical therapy isn’t about traditional "exercises." It’s about gentle movement, alignment, and play-based strategies tailored to an infant’s developing nervous system. Here are three of the most common reasons parents seek :

1. Torticollis

Infant torticollis often occurs when there are tension patterns in the body (not just restrictions in the neck!), causing a baby to tilt their head one way and turn it toward the other. You might notice your baby always prefers one side during feedings, prefers looking in one direction while resting, or struggles with tummy time.

Through gentle, specialized stretching, positioning, targeted play activities, and bodywork (such as myofascial release and craniosacral therapy), pediatric physical therapy helps restore full body mobility, enabling your baby to move symmetrically and comfortably.

2. Head Flattening (Plagiocephaly & Brachycephaly)

Because babies spend significant time sleeping safely on their backs, it’s common for asymmetric pressure to create a flat spot on the side (plagiocephaly) or back (brachycephaly) of the head. Torticollis and head flattening often go hand-in-hand because a persistent head preference exerts continuous pressure on one spot.

Early physical therapy provides conservative treatments to reshape the skull naturally—focusing on active neck mobility, core strength, and positioning strategies—which can often prevent or minimize the need for a cranial remolding helmet (See our other blog post for more info on that!)

3. Developmental Milestone Support

Every baby develops at their own unique pace, but motor milestones follow a predictable sequence: building head control, rolling, pushing up, sitting independently, crawling, and standing.

If your baby is struggling with tummy time, feeling frustrated during floor play, or falling behind on gross motor milestones, pediatric physical therapy provides targeted guidance to build the foundational strength, balance, and motor control required for their next leap forward.

The Function Forward Approach: Baby-Led, Parent-Centered

Navigating early developmental concerns should feel supportive—never stressful. Our care model is built around four core commitments to families:

Over 20 Years of Specialized Clinical Experience

Your baby’s care is delivered by a highly experienced, board-certified physical therapist with two decades of clinical expertise in pediatric and neurological specialties. We bring top-tier diagnostic skill and evidence-based care straight to your living room.

Gentle, Play-Based & Baby-Led Care

We work around your baby’s schedule—including feeding times and naps. Sessions are never forced or rigid. By utilizing purposeful play, gentle handling, and responsive bodywork, we keep sessions engaging, comfortable, and tear-free.

Deep Parent Partnership & Education

You are the expert on your baby. A major focus of every visit is empowering you with simple, practical strategies you can seamlessly integrate into daily routines—like diaper changes, holding positions, and floor play—so progress continues naturally between visits.

No Wait Lists & No Crowded Clinics

Early intervention matters, especially when shaping head symmetry or addressing tight muscles. You shouldn't have to sit on a multi-month waiting list or drag a newborn through a busy clinic waiting room. We offer prompt, convenient in-home scheduling in the Kansas City metro area.

Coverage and Getting Started in KC

We believe high-quality, specialized care should be accessible. Function Forward Physical Therapy is an in-network provider with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS).

Because both Kansas and Missouri allow direct access to physical therapy, you do not need to wait for a referral to begin exploring how therapy can help your baby.

My 68 year old Husband who suffered from muscle tiredness brought on by chronic fatigue in its early stages. Neurologists first had difficulty diagnosing it until multiple examinations indicated MSA, for which there was no known cure other than the prescription of levodopa medications, vitamins, and therapies. More advancements in breathing difficulties, before we made the decision to try different medications, which significantly enhanced his condition. He received MSA-5 treatment for MSA at Limitlessnaturalwellness. com from the U.S approximately four months ago; since then, he sleeps well, works out frequently, and has become very active. it has improved his quality of life. .
